As athletes working toward elite levels, we have two fundamental challenges in front of us. The first is building ourselves as the athletes we expect to be. The second is sustaining what we’ve built. Building and sustaining athletic capacity are two very different activities; if we’re to accomplish all that we aspire to accomplish, we must be proficient in both.
To build is to create. As athletes, we are responsible for what it is that we build, what we create out of ourselves. That starts with honest assessments of what we’re working with. Are you a naturally talented athlete who needs to improve fundamentals? Or are you more fundamentally sound than full of raw talent? Maybe you’re some mix of both.
